Which Cal Poly majors have the most applicants? Here’s how they compare

Cal Poly hit a record-high number of applicants vying for a spot at the San Luis Obispo university.

A total of 68,270 students applied, according to data gathered from the university in April. That’s up from 66,009 the year before.

But because Cal Poly has limited funding and space available, it simply doesn’t have the capacity to grant every student admission.

Some majors at Cal Poly receive far more applicants than others, university data show.

This is due to a variety of factors, said Terrance Harris, the university’s vice president for strategic enrollment management.

“Some programs naturally have a greater interest, some are really more specific than others,” he said. “There are things that take place in the global economy that impact students’ decisions about what direction they want to go. There are thoughts around job market and intended outcomes that impact where students want to go.”

“At the end of the day, we’re talking about students and human choices, and they will vary,” he added.
