Cal Poly to hold HIV education and prevention event

Cal Poly welcomes the public to attend an HIV prevention and awareness event Thursday called “Know Your Status.”

The day will include discussions on the stigma of HIV, free HIV testing, special guests talking about their experiences — including HIV-positive actor Danny Pintauro from “Who’s the Boss?” — and information on preventive medicine known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.

The event will be held in University Union Room 207 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the right wing of the Chumash Auditorium. Speaker Eric Paul Leue, also known as Mr. LA Leather 2014, will appear from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pintauro will speak from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Free HIV testing will be held in the Gender Equity Center from noon to 4 p.m.

Prizes and giveaways will be offered as well.

The event will be hosted by Cal Poly students and the Access Support Network, a nonprofit serving those in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties with HIV/AIDS. They’re working in collaboration with the Pride Center on campus to alleviate the stigma toward the HIV community and spread awareness of the importance of HIV prevention and education.
