California State Fair seeking entries for new student competition

California’s best and brightest students can show their stuff this summer in a revamped State Fair showcase competition.

The 2016 California State Fair in Sacramento will mark the debut of the California Student Showcase Competition, an expanded version of the Youth Art and Industrial & Technology Education competitions. The showcase “recognizes the skills students develop in and outside of the classroom,” according to a news release.

Students statewide from all grade levels — from kindergarten through community college — may submit works in the fine art, science, creative arts, innovations & future economics and industrial & vocational skills categories. Students who win Best of Show will be awarded a $100 cash prize and a Golden Bear Trophy. Home-schooled and independent-study students and members of community clubs and groups also may enter.

Entries are due by April 27. The State Fair charges a $9 entry fee, and projects must have been completed within the past two years. Submissions will be judged May 26 and will be on display during the State Fair from July 8 to 24.
