New Tech and Nipomo High briefly on lockdown following BB gun shooting
Central Coast New Tech High School and Nipomo High School were briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after five people in a vehicle fired a BB gun at a nearby home.
An administrator at New Tech confirmed the campus went under lockdown as a precautionary measure after being informed by law enforcement of a possible drive-by shooting nearby.
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said the shooting of the BB gun happened about 10:50 a.m. about five blocks from the school in the 100 block of Mallagh Street in Nipomo.
Cipolla said five people in a vehicle — three adults between the ages of 18 and 21, as well as two 15-year-olds — shot BBs at a home on Mallagh Street, but no one was injured. All five were quickly detained by sheriff’s deputies, who placed each of them under arrest on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon, Cipolla said.
Officials have determined there was no risk to students at the school, and the lockdown was lifted by 11:30 a.m.
