Most SLO County schools will stay closed until May, districts say

At least three of San Luis Obispo County’s largest school districts have announced plans to stay closed through the beginning of May.

In news releases Friday evening, San Luis Coastal Unified School District, Lucia Mar Unified School District and Paso Robles Joint Unified School District all confirmed their facilities will not reopen before May 4.

All together, the three school districts enroll roughly 25,000 students across a broad swath of San Luis Obispo County.

“It is our hope that this can happen so that we can conclude the school year and seniors in particular can return for traditional activities and ceremonies,” Paso Robles Superintendent Curt Dubost said in a news release Friday.

Students were expected to return to in-person classes at all three districts by the end of April. Lucia Mar had already extended its closure through late April, after initially expecting to return to normal classes by March 27.

The districts all confirmed that online learning classes will continue throughout the length of the closure. Free meals for students will also continue to be offered at participating campuses across the county.
