2 Arroyo Grande High School students test positive for coronavirus

Two Arroyo Grande High School students have tested positive for coronavirus, the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department confirmed Sunday night.

Arroyo Grande High School had previously told parents that a 10th grade student tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19, but details on the second student were not released.

On Sunday night, San Luis Obispo County public health officer Dr. Penny Borenstein confirmed both the 10th grade student and a 12th grade student had tested positive.

According to a Public Health Department news release, students may have been exposed to the 10th grader on March 13 — the final day before Lucia Mar Unified School District closed its schools, including Arroyo Grande High School.

The 12th grade student is believed to have been contagious after the school was already closed, according to the release, so it is not believed that students were exposed to coronavirus via this person.

“The county will take a balanced approach in notifying school administration and individuals who potentially had contact with infected individuals, while maintaining medical privacy,” Borenstein said in the release.

Lucia Mar schools are expected to stay closed until April 20.

As of Sunday evening, 27 people had tested positive for coronavirus in San Luis Obispo County.
