Cal Poly, CSU tell employees over 65: ‘Do not report to work’

California State University employees age 65 and older and those vulnerable to COVID-19 are being told not to go work until further notice, Cal Poly announced Sunday.

That includes faculty and staff members who work at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

The announcement came after Governor Gavin Newsom urged those groups to practice at-home isolation.

“We understand this impacts many Cal Poly employees,” says a campus-wide email sent from the Cal Poly President’s Office on Sunday. “If you meet the criteria above, please do not report to work tomorrow.”

Faculty and staff were directed to make arrangements to work from home. Those whose responsibilities cannot be done virtually “will be placed on administrative leave with pay for their normally scheduled hours,” the message says.

The ASI Children’s Center is open at this time. The preschool learning lab through the College of Liberal Arts is closed, according to university spokesperson Matt Lazier.

These are the latest adjustments to university life altered by public health directives meant to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, which is especially dangerous for the elderly and others with weaker immune systems.

There are two confirmed cases of coronavirus in San Luis Obispo County, as of Sunday.

Last week the university announced finals would be held online, spring term would be postponed a week to April 6, and the first two weeks of classes would be held virtually.

Events with attendance of more than 50 are canceled or postponed. All Big West Athletics games are suspended.

Campus remains open, though walkways and classrooms were quiet Monday morning.
