Update 10:30 a.m. Wednesday: Authorities have identified the victim in the Grover Beach apartment fire as Joseph Charles Kienly IV of Grover Beach. Grover Beach police say the victim’s family has been notified and is requesting privacy. The suspect arrested in the case, Manuel Jesus Perez, remains in custody.
Update 8:15 p.m.: The man discovered by fire crews responding to a residential fire in Grover Beach Monday morning was killed by his roommate following a physical altercation, the Grover Beach Police Department said in a statement late Monday.
The deceased man has not been identified pending notification of his family, but police say his roommate, 41-year-old Manuel Jesus Perez, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and arson later in the day in San Luis Obispo.
As of Monday evening, Perez remained in custody at the San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he was being held without bail.
At about 6:20 a.m., firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of North 13th Street that was contained to a single apartment. They located the man inside and opened a homicide investigation once the death was determined to be suspicious, the statement reads.
Investigators from the Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and Five Cities Fire Authority determined a physical altercation took place between the roommates, resulting in the man’s death.
In a news release, the Grover Beach Police Department said that Perez fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency crews but was later located and arrested without incident by the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
Original story: Fire officials said a deceased person was found after they were called to a fire at a house in Grover Beach on Monday morning.
Crews were called to the 100 block of North 13th Street about 6:20 a.m., according to the Five Cities Fire Authority. When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire that was contained to one apartment.
A dead person also was found inside the home.
A suspicious death investigation is underway. No further details were available Monday evening.
