Joseph Chavez, 35, of Guadalupe was arrested Saturday morning on two outstanding warrants, and on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun, among other charges.

A Guadalupe man was arrested Saturday in Grover Beach after officers were dispatched to check the welfare of a man lying on the sidewalk, according to a Grover Beach Police Department news release.

At 10:44 a.m., Grover Beach police officers were dispatched to South 13th Street and Highland Way, the news release said. As an officer arrived, the man, identified as Joseph Chavez, 35, ran off and began jumping over several fences.

Officers established a perimeter, and Chavez was later found as he walked at South 14th Street and Baden Avenue, the news release said.

Shortly after, a resident reported finding a sweatshirt in her yard with a gun inside. The sweatshirt was identified as belonging to Chavez, and the gun was determined to be loaded.

Chavez was arrested for two outstanding warrants — one felony, one misdemeanor — and on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun, resisting arrest, providing a false name and for probation violation, the news release said.

He was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail with bail set at $70,000, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office website. Chavez was still in custody Sunday afternoon.

The Arroyo Grande Police Department and the county Sheriff’s Office assisted Grover Beach police with the incident.
