San Luis Obispo police are warning drivers to secure their vehicles and take extra precautions after a series of car thefts Wednesday.

There were 11 early morning thefts from unlocked vehicles, said Capt. Keith Storton in a San Luis Obispo Police Department release. The vehicles were located on Fixilini and Alta streets, Corralitos and Alisal avenues, Wilding Lane and San Luis Drive.

March vehicle thefts from unlocked cars and open truck beds, along with incidents in which force was not used, saw a 70 percent increase from 2015, Storton said.

Police encourage drivers to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight.

Residents are asked to reports thefts and suspicious behavior by contacting the San Luis Obispo police at 805-781-7312.
