Law enforcement agencies across San Luis Obispo County will be ramping up efforts to combat impaired driving this week through the holiday season, when local authorities say they see an increase in DUI-related deaths each year.
Beginning Friday through Jan. 3, area police departments and the county Sheriff’s Office will conduct heightened “saturation” patrols for impaired drivers in areas known to have higher concentrations of DUI arrests and accidents.
Two DUI checkpoints are currently scheduled for the 17-day period: the Arroyo Grande Police Department will conduct a checkpoint Saturday, and the San Luis Obispo Police Department has a checkpoint scheduled for the evening of New Year’s Day. The locations of those checkpoints have not been released.
More checkpoints may be scheduled during that period, officials say.
