A Cayucos man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed a woman in the back with a knife, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Sebastian Agrey, 43, was taken into custody after the alleged afternoon assault, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The victim, a 49-year-old female, was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for her injuries, the news release stated.

The news release did not name the victim, nor did it detail the severity of her injuries or whether she remained hospitalized as of Thursday evening.

About 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call of a woman who had been assaulted on Fourth Street in Cayucos, according to the release. The alleged victim told the deputies she had been stabbed in the back with a knife, and that a male fled the area on foot.

The Sheriff’s Office says deputies then began searching for the man, locating Agrey about 45 minutes later “in the same general vicinity where the incident occurred.”

Agrey was arrested and booked on suspicion of one count of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the release. He was being held Thursday evening in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

A phone call to a Sheriff’s Office spokesman was not immediately returned.
