Man shot with foam rounds during standoff at SLO pharmacy, police say
Editor’s note: This story mentions suicide.
A 55-year-old man was taken into custody on Saturday evening after a standoff in which he allegedly refused to leave a San Luis Obispo business culminated in him being shot by police with foam munitions.
According to the San Luis Obispo Police Department, officers received a report of a male refusing to leave the business at 1300 Madonna Road — the listed address for CVS Pharmacy — at about 7:56 p.m. on Saturday.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a man later identified as Steven Wilson, an unhoused resident of San Luis Obispo. Wilson reportedly began to yell at the police to not come near him and stated several times that he had a firearm and wanted to die.
Wilson continued to threaten officers and refused to comply with their orders after 20 minutes of negotiations, the Police Department said.
He then allegedly reached into a pack he was wearing at his waist, at which point officers used “less lethal munitions made of dense foam” which struck him in the leg.
He was taken into custody without further incident. No firearm was found on his person, the Police Department said.
Wilson was then taken to a local hospital for treatment of his minor injuries before being booking into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of charges of felony resisting an executive officer, as well as local misdemeanor warrants. He remained in custody as of Tuesday evening with bail set at $31,000, according to the SLO County Sheriff’s Office’s Who’s in Custody page.
No officers were injured during the incident, the Police Department said.
