CHP deploys spike strip during Highway 101 chase in SLO County
A driver allegedly threw a cellphone out of a car window amid a law enforcement pursuit on Highway 101 through San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday afternoon.
The chase ensued around 1 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 near Paso Robles, before the vehicle exited at Camp Roberts and re-entered the highway heading south, according to emergency radio traffic.
At one point during the chase, someone in the car threw what California Highway Patrol officers initially thought was a gun out of the window, but after they stopped to search the area, they discovered it was a cellphone, radio traffic said.
CHP officers then deployed a spike strip on the highway south of San Marcos Road between San Miguel and Wellsona, according to scanner chatter.
The car was later observed still heading southbound, but at slower speeds — potentially with its two front tires punctured by the spikes.
The Tribune reached out to the Templeton CHP office for more information, but did not immediately receive a response.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
