Someone painted racist graffiti on SLO City Hall bus stop. Police need help to find them

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is searching for a person who spray-painted racist graffiti at a downtown bus stop last week.

According to police spokesperson Christine Wallace, the department received a report of graffiti on the bus stop shelter seats at City Hall on Feb. 2.

Wallace said the person had painted “f--- n-----” and “f--- white boys” across the seats.

The department shared surveillance footage of the incident soon after in hopes of apprehending the person but as of Monday had not yet located a suspect, Wallace said.

In the video, two people wearing backpacks can be seen at the bus stop, before one of them moves behind a pillar. It’s unclear if that is when they are painting the seats.

She added it was cleaned up by Public Works shortly after it was reported to police.

The incident angered local groups, including the San Luis Obispo County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which called the incident a “disgusting crime.”

“We are sickened by the racist graffiti at the San Luis Obispo City Hall,” the group wrote in an Instagram post. “... We appreciate that the SLO City Police Department continues to investigate this offensive action. We will work to ensure that someone is brought to justice for this disgusting crime.”

The group went on to say that it views “this type of hate as a direct threat to our democracy and well-being.”

“Discrimination and hate have many negative consequences for those targeted,” the post read. “They also harm all of us. True patriotism recognizes that our country is stronger when we work together. When we value other cultures, learn from one another, struggle and strive together, we build a better and happier community and country.”

The post concluded: “Hate based on ethnicity, color, gender, etc. has no place in our county or country. We can do better.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Police Department at 805-781-7312 and reference #250202060.
