The Morro Bay Police Department arrested a man on suspicion of vehicle theft after he was found driving a stolen pickup, according to a news release.

On Sunday, police received an alert that a stolen vehicle had entered city limits. A search for the vehicle led them to Thomas Hight, driving a 2024 Ford F-250 pickup with a 2025 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the bed.

During their investigation, officers found that Hight had attempted to purchase the pickup from Perry Ford in San Luis Obispo, according to police. But when Hight’s payment bounced and the truck couldn’t be recovered, the dealership reported the vehicle stolen.

Hight later returned to the dealership to purchase another vehicle, the release said. When dealership staff confronted Hight about the pickup and asked him to pay or return it, he fled the property in the truck, damaging the landscaping as an employee attempted to block him.

Hight was arrested Sunday on suspicion of vehicle theft. His bail was set at $70,000, according to the SLO County Jail’s Who’s in Custody website.

The San Luis Obispo and Fresno police departments were also notified of Hight’s arrest and what Morro Bay police said were “pending additional cases from the Ford and Harley dealerships.”

The investigation is ongoing, police say. Anyone with information can contact Sgt. Nicole Taylor, 805-772-6233 or San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP.
