SLO County man charged with stabbing father to death will be assessed for mental competency
The man accused of fatally stabbing his father, injuring his mother and setting their house on fire in Arroyo Grande made his first court appearance Thursday, where a judge declared a doubt into his competency to stand trial.
In a GoFundMe, Family members identified Miguel Osio as the man who was killed by Alan Fonseca Osio, his 29-year-old son. Veronica Osio, Alan Osio’s mother, was injured but is recovering, the GoFundMe said.
On Wednesday evening, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office charged Alan Osio with murder, attempted murder, arson and injuring police animal. He is accused of fatally stabbing his father Miguel and injuring his mother Veronica, before setting their home on fire and attempting to flee the scene.
Officers quickly caught Osio and booked him into San Luis Obispo County Jail.
San Luis Obispo Superior Court Judge Barry LaBarbera declared a doubt about Osio’s competence to stand trial, meaning Osio will now be evaluated by mental health professionals to see if he needs to receive treatment in order to understand the charges against him.
He did not enter a plea.
LaBarbera said all criminal proceedings in the case will cease until Osio’s competency case is resolved.
This is the third time Osio had a doubt declared as to his competency, records show, with Osio receiving competency treatment in 2019 and 2021 for previous charges.
