Police seize skimming devices from ATMs at 2 SLO County banks

Paso Robles police seized skimmer devices installed on the ATMs of two banks on Friday, according to a news release.

“Skimming devices are used to record the ATM card data, which is then transferred to a blank card that has a magnetic strip to create a clone of the victim’s ATM card,” the news release said.

Coast Hills Federal Credit Union on Spring Street discovered a skimming device on of its ATM at about 9:47 a.m. Friday, police said.

When police arrived to remove the device, they found a “a small camera had been mounted into the frame of the ATM, which would allow for the recording of ATM card PIN information,” the release said.

On Friday, police also removed a skimmer device from the ATM at Premier Valley Bank on Spring Street, the release said.

According to the investigation so far, the skimmers were likely placed at the banks at 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

“There has been a recent uptick in located skimming devices which have been found at these banks and Bank of America on Spring Street,” the release said. “Banking customers should closely monitor their bank activity if they have used ATM’s at these, or any, locations recently.”
