Update: Suspect arrested after stabbing at Mission Plaza in SLO
San Luis Obispo police have arrested a man suspected in a stabbing Thursday evening at Mission Plaza.
At about 5:15 p.m., police received reports about a man had been stabbed at the intersection of Monterey and Chorro streets, the Police Department said in a news release.
After the man — who was estimated to be in his 30s, fell to the ground in front of a nearby business, eyewitnesses called for help, SLO police Sgt. Bryan Treanor told The Tribune.
Responding officers assisted the victim until paramedics arrived, while investigators spoke with witnesses, who directed them toward Mission Plaza.
Investigators found and followed a trail of blood to a suspect identified as 61-year-old Samuel Greene, who was interviewed and then arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He was set to be booked at County Jail later Thursday night.
The knife used in the assault was located with Greene, police said.
Witnesses told police that the victim initiated a fight with Greene before the stabbing occurred. The investigation is continuing to determine if any charges are warranted against the victim, police said in the release.
The victim was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The San Luis Obispo Farmers Market was canceled due to the rain, so the stabbing did not disrupt the event.
Anyone who witnessed the altercation or has information about the incident is asked to call San Luis Obispo Police Department at 805-781-7312 or Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP.
