CHP investigates Highway 101 shooting in Atascadero; freeway briefly closed

Highway 101 was briefly shut down after an alleged shooting near Atascadero on Thursday.

A California Highway Patrol officer at the scene told The Tribune three bullets were fired in an incident near Santa Barbara Road on Thursday afternoon, with one hitting a construction truck with several people inside.

Nobody was injured in the altercation.

The shots were fired from a white BMW with a pink sticker on the gas flap, according to Jose Meza with Templeton CHP.

Four men were in the work truck, and the BMW had multiple occupants. The shots were fired from the right front passenger door.

CHP officers could been seen near the southbound Santa Barbara Road exit around 6 p.m., taking photos of a construction truck with a visible bullet hole in the driver’s side door.

Caltrans was also at the scene setting up barricades to block the on- and off-ramps at the exit.

Around 6:30 p.m., southbound lanes of the highway were briefly closed to through traffic while officers scoured the scene for evidence.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact CHP’s Templeton office.

Atascadero Police Department was also assisting in the investigation.
