A fight broke out in Atascadero on Thursday after one man allegedly stabbed and killed another man’s dog with a pocket knife, according to police.

Officers responded to the area of Buena Avenue and Sycamore Road around 5:50 p.m. Thursday after receving reports of a physical fight, the Atascadero Police Department said in a news release Friday.

When officers arrived, they found two adult men involved in a dispute, the release said.

According to police, the men had been walking their dogs off-leash in the Salinas River riverbed when the two animals began to fight.

Police said the dogs had “been involved in a past incident,” but did not release details.

According to the release, one of the men then used a pocket knife to stab the other man’s dog in an attempt to stop the fight. The dog died of its injuries at the scene, police said.

Police said that’s when a fight broke out between the two men. Criminal threats are also made at that time, according to the release.

The incident is under criminal investigation by the Atascadero Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 805-461-5051.
