SLO County sheriff arrests man who allegedly set up camera in Cal Poly dorm bathroom
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Northern California man who allegedly filmed unsuspecting women and men in his Cal Poly dorm bathroom, among other places.
According to a news release Monday, an investigation by members of the Sheriff’s Office’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Team and Internet Crimes Against Children Unit culminated in an arrest warrant for 21-year-old Millan Chaudhary of Los Gatos.
A cyber tip led authorities to investigate Chaudhary, who they found had numerous times set up a video system in his bathroom to film unsuspecting individuals, the Sheriff’s Office said. This took place both before and during his time as a student at Cal Poly, according to the release.
Chaudhary allegedly filmed women and some men in various states of undress in the dorms at Cal Poly, at a home off campus in San Luis Obispo and at various locations in the San Francisco Bay area and Lake Tahoe, according to the news release.
Some of the people being filmed were adults and some were underage, the Sheriff’s Office said.
It is believed there were 24 people filmed in total. All of the incidents involving minors occurred outside of San uis Obispo County, according to the release.
The San Luis Obispo County videos all appear to have been taken between February 2019 and February 2020, according to the release.
A search warrant was served at Chaudhary’s San Luis Obispo home on Feb. 20, the Sheriff’s Office said. Wworking with detectives at Cal Poly as well, investigators seized a phone and computers that contained images of child pornography, the release said.
Over the course of the investigation, authorities found that Chaudhary was taking images from the videos he made and then distributing those online, according to the release.
Chaudhary was arrested Aug. 7 on suspicion of felony exhibiting a minor in pornography, felony possession of material depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct, felony eavesdropping and misdemeanor invasion of privacy, the Sheriff’s Office said.
His bail was set at $600,000; he has since posted bail and been released, according to the release.
