Look out for counterfeit $100 bills ‘blowing in the wind,’ Grover Beach police say

Some Grover Beach residents out for morning strolls on Wednesday likely thought it was their lucky day.

A man turned in a “wad” of $100 bills he said he came across on his morning walk, the Grover Beach Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page Wednesday morning.

Around the same time, the department said, it received numerous reports of $100 bills “blowing in the wind” down Grand Avenue.

“Not a call you typically get everyday, we might add,” the post reads.

Grover Beach police said that when officers arrived to Grand Avenue and started collecting the bills, they determined it was counterfeit.

Officers had collected all the fake money they could find as of 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, but the department says it’s possible more bills are “still blowing in the wind somewhere.”

Though it’s “obvious” the cash is counterfeit when handled and looked at, police said they wanted to alert residents and business owners to be aware so no one is deceived by the “funny money.”

If you find counterfeit cash, call the department’s dispatch center at 805-473-4511 and an officer will respond to collect it from you.
