Los Osos man arrested after allegedly stabbing victim ‘several times’ in fight

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Los Osos man on Thursday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an assault near a home in the 1800 block of 10th Street in Los Osos at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, deputies found a 34-year-old Los Osos man with multiple stab wounds to the shoulder and back, the release said.

Witnesses told deputies that Matthew Robert Hathaway, 28, broke a window at the victim’s residence, the Sheriff’s Office said, causing a man and woman to come out of their home.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Hathaway physically assaulted the woman and got into a fight with the man that “resulted in Hathaway stabbing the victim several times” before fleeing the scene.

Hathaway returned to his home two blocks away on the same street as the victim’s house, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies and detectives arrested Hathaway at his home without incident, according to the news release.

Hathaway’s alleged victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening wounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He has since been treated and released from the hospital, the agency said.

Hathaway was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail at 7:35 a.m. Thursday after being treated at a hospital for his injuries, according to Sheriff’s Office booking logs.

He was being held in jail custody Thursday morning in lieu of $500,000 bail.

There are no other suspects in the case, the release said.

However, the Sheriff’s Office said it is continuing to investigate the incident.
