Anaheim man allegedly carjacks vehicle in Grover Beach, then crashes
A 27-year-old Anaheim man was arrested in connection with a carjacking that took place on New Year’s Eve in Grover Beach, according to the city’s Police Department.
Luis Enrique Lopez Ortiz allegedly flagged down a passing motorist Tuesday at about 7:45 p.m. in the area of 7th Street and Longbranch Avenue.
The carjacker told the driver to get out of the car and then took control of the wheel, fleeing in the dark gray, 2016 Toyota Camry, police said in a Facebook post.
No weapons were seen and no injuries were reported at the time of the incident, police reported.
Later that night, the Camry was found severely damaged after a traffic collision, resting upside down on its hood, in Guadalupe.
Lopez Ortiz was arrested and treated for minor injuries before being booked into County Jail, police said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the county’s “Who’s in Custody” website listed Lopez Ortiz in custody on charges of carjacking, auto theft and driving with a blood alcohol level above 0.08%. He’s being held in lieu of $125,000 bail.
The stolen car was listed as “destroyed” because of the severity of its damage, police said.
