The Arroyo Grande Police Department is warning residents to be cautious with their mail after an increase in thefts from mailboxes over the weekend.

According to a news release, mail that was left overnight in mailboxes appears to have been stolen. The department is working to identify suspects; anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 805-473-5100.

People are reminded to take the following precautions to deter mail theft:

▪  Collect mail as soon as possible after delivery, especially after late deliveries, since the vast majority of mail theft occurs at night.

▪  Leave your exterior lights on or use motion detection lights to discourage potential thieves.

▪  Consider using locking mailboxes.

Additional resources are available through the U.S. Postal Service by calling 1-800-275-8777 or visiting www.usps.gov.
