California Highway Patrol officials believe alcohol or drugs may have played a role in a deadly crash that killed a 23-year-old Paso Robles man Sunday night near Highway 101.
Juan Carlos Diaz was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze southbound south of Spring Street about 10:15 p.m. in a posted construction zone and steered the vehicle into a closed off lane, colliding with the back end of a dump tractor and trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Diaz was pronounced dead at this scene, and a passenger in the vehicle, 26-year-old Caspar Gonzalez Rojas of Paso Robles suffered major injuries. Gonzalez Rojas was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment.
CHP spokesman Patrick Seebart said officials are still investigating the incident, and “drugs and or alcohol played a role in this collision.”
