San Luis Obispo police will hold DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols through the end of the year to help curb drinking and driving during the holiday season.

The department is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a year-end Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement mobilization through Jan. 1, according to a news release.

The department will hold a DUI checkpoint on Dec. 15 and DUI saturation patrols on Dec. 22.

CHP and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office will also deploy DUI checkpoints and patrols during this year-end period.

In 2016, motor vehicle traffic crashes killed 37,461 people, according to the release. Twenty-eight percent died in crashes where the driver had a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
