The now 24-year-old Famous Jazz Artist Series, produced by Charlie and Sandi Shoemake, is returning — but not to Cambria just yet. Building codes and permits have stalled the series return to Cambria at Steve Crimmel’s new Painted Sky Studio at 715 Main St.

“We’ve already had to cancel our originally proposed March 6 opening,” Charlie Shoemake said, “and now our next concert there on April 10 as well.”

The April 10 date is significant, Shoemake said, as it features Grammy-winning pianist Bill Cunliffe with an all-star New York City rhythm section. The Shoemakes avoided canceling the concert by securing the Unity Church in San Luis Obispo (1130 Orcutt Road) for April 10.

The single performance is tentatively set for 3 p.m., with tickets priced at $20 per person. Reservations: 927-0179 or charlie@talsanmusic.com.

Shoemake said: “We’re now hoping for a grand Cambria opening on Sunday, May 1, which will feature a tribute to the music of jazz great George Shearing and his quintet” (of which Shoemake was a member for seven years).

The Shoemakes — vibraphonist Charlie and vocalist Sandi — moved to Cambria in 1990. Their jazz series began at The Hamlet, moving to Paso Robles when that venue closed in 2012. It returned to Cambria in 2015 for a season at the Cambria Center for the Arts.
