Gala opening Friday celebrates youth art

Retired high school art teacher, author and artist Art Sherwyn is judge of the Youth Art Show in Cambria this year.

The show opens with free public gala featuring entertainment by performing arts youth starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Cambria Center for the Arts, 1350 Main St.

Sherwyn has received high honors, including the prestigious American Disney Teacher Award, and the California and National Secondary Art Educator of the Year award, as well as numerous invitations to speak at local, state and national conferences for arts, education and leadership.

His workshops, retreats and public lectures are known to inspire audiences to “dance beyond convention,” enthusiasts say, and to accept failure as a precursor to success while enriching lives through the skill and freedom cultivated through the artistic process.

Sherwyn said he is looking forward to encouraging the young artists.

“We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful resource now retiring to our community,”“ Coast Union High School art teacher Suzette Morrow said. “Art leaves everyone he meets feeling better about what they have created.”

The fourth annual Youth Art Show in Cambria celebrates the importance of art education during March, Youth Art Month. The Youth Art Show allows the visual and performing arts students to shine.

One-of-a-kind shopping bags will be for sale at the opening Friday to raise funds for art education.
