San Simeon’s Manta Rey is people’s choice at Soupabration
Manta Rey of San Simeon took the title of People’s Favorite Soup for its roasted poblano with crema fresca and pomegranate seeds soup at the sixth annual Soupabration event this past weekend in Morro Bay.
Miguel and Theresa de Alba also took the Best Vegetarian/Vegan Soup award for Manta Rey’s creamy French lentil with kale.
Several hundred attendees voted for their favorite soup.
The Best of Show and Best Seasonal Soup awards both went to the soup, butternut squash cappucino with coconut cashew cream and cinnamon froth entered by Shine Café in Morro Bay. Robert Halpern’s creation not only took home that award but also was honored as Best Seasonal Soup.
Chef Gary Barker of Divine Street Catering in Cayucos was also an award-winner, taking top honors in the Best Chowder or Bisque category for his Boston clam chowder.
In all, a dozen chefs took part in the annual Pacific Wildlife Care fundraiser in Morro Bay. Judges included Chad Minton, executive chef of the Carmel Highlands Hyatt; Rachel Duchak, Central Coast Foodie blogger; Taylor Newton, scientist and member of the Morro Bay Tourism Board; Neeta Mittal, LXV Wines owner; and cookbook author Brenda Hock.
