Highway 1 rumble strips to be moved slightly; more planned on Highway 46
Work on the Caltrans rumble strip safety project on Highway 1 has moved back into the North Coast area, where it’s to continue into early or mid-September. Some modifications could lessen the rumbling noise heard by people who live nearby.
During the redo, motorists will encounter one-way reversing traffic control from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with flaggers from Burton Drive to just south of Cambria Drive for two days during the week of Aug. 29 and for three additional days during the week of Sept. 6.
Delays are not expected to exceed 15 minutes. Electronic message signs will alert travelers about the roadwork.
The rumble strips installed this summer within the curved, nearly one-mile section of Highway 1 will be moved one foot into the shoulder to minimize noise impacts that residents hear when vehicles drift onto them. This vibration has been amplified toward residents living near the roadway.
Rumble strips are supposed to be installed to the right of the fog line, according to Caltrans spokesman Colin Jones.
Souza Construction of San Luis Obispo is the contractor for the $1.6 million project that’s expected to be completed by the end of September.
More rumble strips
Jones said Monday, Aug. 29, that another rumble strip project is on the books for 19 miles of Highway 46 between Cambria and Theater Drive in Paso Robles (near Highway 101). If the bidding and award process goes as expected, that project could start by the end of 2017.
Highway 1 realignment at Piedras
Another Caltrans project, this one to realign a nearly three-mile segment of Highway 1 from Point Piedras Blancas to the Arroyo de la Cruz Bridge near San Simeon, is continuing, with construction of new bridges and grading for the new travel lane.
Caltrans officials say most of the project’s construction happens adjacent to the existing highway, but motorists may encounter occasional daytime lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., with delays not to exceed 10 minutes each.
Papich Construction of Grover Beach is the contractor for the $19.7 million project, which is expected to be complete by the winter of 2018.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over, slow down and share the road when driving through highway construction zones.
