A day of family-friendly ocean-oriented activities at San Simeon Cove will be a focus of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s “Get Into Your Sanctuary” celebration Saturday, June 25.
All local events will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coastal Discovery Center and San Simeon Pier in Hearst State Beach, across Highway 1 from the entrance driveway to the Hearst Castle Visitors Center.
The sanctuary stretches along the coast from Cambria to Marin County.
This is the second annual “Get into Your Sanctuary” event, which is celebrated in marine sanctuaries throughout the U.S. and includes a photo contest.

Activities at the discovery center and surrounding park and shore include a pier safari, a beachcomber’s “Stump the Chump,” learning about whales and other marine mammals, exploring the beach with marine biologists and weaving an “Ocean’s Pledge.” Children also can complete a scavenger hunt for a prize, and help keep the sanctuary clean by becoming an official “Litter Getter.”
