Peeps library diorama contest to begin in March
The fourth annual Peeps Diorama Contest starts Tuesday, March 1, at the Cambria Public Library and five other libraries in San Luis Obispo County. Each entrant is asked to design and build a diorama with at least two of the iconic, sugary Peeps candies in it.
All entries must be received at the library by 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. Library patrons in each branch can vote from March 21-25 to select the winners in three age brackets (children 12 and younger, teens, adults). Awards will be given Saturday, March 26.
Each Peep-able diorama must portray a book title, poem or nursery rhyme and include that title in or on the diorama, along with the title of the entry (if different). Each person is allowed to submit only one entry.
An entrant who wishes to do so can use his or her own poem as the basis for the diorama. After all, April is National Poetry Month. However, in that case, the original poem must be attached to the entry.
The contest is open to all ages. Other participating branches include San Luis Obispo City-County Library, 995 Palm St., and libraries in Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande, Atascadero and Shell Beach.
Cambria creativity
As Destiny Carter, supervising Cambria library assistant, has said in the past, “It takes a special kind of creativity to look at a Peep and see the protagonist of a book or other character. There’s so much creativity in Cambria and the Central Coast, and this is the time to let go and have fun with it.”
Every diorama must be constructed within a shoebox or boot box (one or two sides can be removed for easier viewing). The artist’s name, age and contact information must be on the bottom of the box.
