University Women of Cambria introduced eight scholarship winners from Coast Union High School at their annual luncheon meeting Monday, May 18, at Cambria Pines Lodge.

A total of $10,400 was distributed to qualified  graduates of Coast Union and Leffingwell high schools, using funds generated at the organization’s holiday meeting, silent auction and generous donations.

Since 1988, when the first $300 scholarship was awarded, the women have increased the number and amounts each year, for a cumulative total of $116,500. Many of the 155 recipients have kept in touch and have gone on to successful careers in fields such as law, business management, international relations, education, restaurant management and health care.

Following a reception line with University Women offering their congratulations, scholarship committee members introduced each student and his or her qualifications. The students, in turn, summarized their scholastic and career aspirations and acknowledged the support of their educators and families.

Several recognized the presence of their grandparents in their lives. Toby Lyons referenced his great uncle, Wilfred Lyons, one of Cambria’s pre-eminent historians.

Coast Union winners are Courtney Castle, Maria Guizar, Renee Johnson, Toby Lyons,  Pedro Moran, Carson Pierce, Tiffany Stephens and Ariel West.

Winners from Leffingwell High School will be introduced at their graduation ceremony:  Nicos Ardis, Daniel Forrest, Cristian Gonzales and Corrina Hogaboom.
