Rich Man Poor Man leaves Cayucos, moves to Cambria

Rich Man Poor Man Antiques has pulled up stakes and moved farther north as its owners said goodbye to Cayucos and hello to its new home in Cambria.

The shop closed its doors at 146 N. Ocean Ave. Cayucos in February. Owners JoAnna and Myles Crebs leased a building in the Redwood Center at 2110 Main St. in October 2012. The Cambrian location officially opened on Nov. 1.

While the antique shop has been an established business for 30 years, JoAnna Crebs said moving to a new location is like starting a new business. The challenge is letting people know the business has moved.

However, business in Cambria has been good and sales are running about the same as they did in Cayucos, JoAnna Crebs said.

The Cambria location is approximately 6,000 square feet and showcases about 35 dealers specializing in different areas of antiques: from 16th century French tapestries to “mantiques” and automobilia.

“I’m especially proud of our dealers,” JoAnna Crebs said. “They’ve done a great job here.”

JoAnna and Myles Crebs have been in the antique business for 26 years. They indulged part-time “while chasing their careers,” JoAnna Crebs said. The couple bought Rich Man Poor Man Antiques in 1999 and turned their part-time passion full-time.

“We love the business,” Myles Crebs said. “It isn’t like its work.”

Future plans for the shop include opening an outdoor area for gardening and other outdoor antiques. The Crebs also hope to put on an antique show in Cambria, though they want to get through this year first.

Expanding is also in the back of JoAnna’s mind. She said she still wants Rich Man Poor Man Antiques to have two locations.

Rich Man Poor Man Antiques is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Everyone from novices to big-time collectors are welcomed, even pets.
