Members of Cambria 4-H club entered a great variety of projects in the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, in categories including arts and crafts, baking, sewing, dog, horse and rabbit.

Angelina Perez placed second in the Rabbit Breed Show, which involves a judge looking at the rabbit to see how well it matches the established standard. Angelina’s rabbit is a Holland lop named Cinnabun.

Also in the breed show, Michelle and Patty Acosta placed first and second with their Polish rabbits, Chester and James. Stella Canestro and her Holland lop rabbit took fourth place in the showmanship competition.

The difference between showmanship and the breed show is that the showmanship judge is looking for how well the owner is handling the rabbit. Carla Canestro’s Flemish giant rabbit Rubeus Hagrid took first place in his class.

In arts and crafts, Carla Canestro and Meg Stern both won Judges Awards for their trash-to-treasure projects; Michelle and Patty Acosta both took third for their sewing projects; Michelle and Patty Acosta, Carla and Stella Canestro, Meg Stern, Ruby Nelson and Amelia Griffith all placed first for their stepping stones.

In baking, Carla Canestro won a special award for her fruit tart, Stella Canestro took second and Angelina Perez placed first.

In the dog show Stella Canestro got sixth and eighth place for obedience and showmanship, respectively.

Carla Canestro got fifth place in the 4-H horse show for the single stake race and second in her Hunt and Hack class. Stella Canestro, riding in her first year at the fair, fell off her horse in one of the events and did not place but still had a wonderful time.

Cambria 4-H meetings are on the first Monday of every month unless there is a holiday. Those interested in participating are welcome to join.

Projects of the previous year were baking, arts and crafts, goats, dog, horse, rabbit and sewing.

In addition, 4-H offers other activities. For instance, the past three years, club members have made s’mores, which can be cooked over a little flame for Hospitality Night outside of Among Friends.

The club also creates a scarecrow for the Cambria Scarecrow Festival, which is also found just outside of Among Friends.
