Want to stroll through Hearst Castle’s outdoor art by moonlight? Here’s your chance

Visitors soon will be able to enjoy Hearst Castle’s art and ambiance under the stars during a limited series of evening tours offered on select Friday and Saturday evenings from Oct. 4 through Nov. 16.

Because there’s a limited number of those art-focused tours at the San Simeon estate, reservations are highly recommended, according to a news release from the California Department of State Parks.

“’Art Under the Moonlight’ tours will provide unique opportunities to explore William Randolph Hearst’s world-renowned art collection like never before,” the release said.

“Galatea on a Dolphin,” a 19th Century Italian marble sculpture, is illuminated in the Lily Pond on the Main Terrace of Hearst Castle. It’s one of the many works that can be viewed as part of the “Art Under the Moonlight” tour.

On the 100-minute tours, visitors will see illuminated outdoor works of art while learning about their significance through time.

Then, inside the Castle, guests will get “an intimate look at the art collection that the influential media mogul amassed during his time there,” the release said.

It’s “the same path that Mr. Hearst and his guests strolled while smelling the fragrant blooms and hearing the calming sound of the hilltop fountains,” said Dan Falat, superintendent of the Central Coast State Parks district that includes the Castle.

“The evenings are magical here, and this one-of-a-kind art collection is shown off in the best lighting,” he said.

How to get tickets to Hearst Castle art tour

Tickets are $50 for guests over 12 years old and $25 for children ages 5 through 12. They are available at HearstCastle.org or ReserveCalifornia.com.

The tours include 160 stairs, but an ADA-accessible version of the 100-minute tour with no stairs is also available for up to four people per tour.
