The completion of the school year brings with it the recognition of outstanding achievements by student athletes at Coast Union High School in Cambria.

In addition to awards for individual sports, coaches in the five Coast Union sports choose the most outstanding female and male student athletes of the year.

Caiden Kennedy was honored as Male Athlete of the Year, and Hatzumy Ramirez received the honor of being named Female Athlete of the Year for the 2022-23 school year.

Kennedy played football, basketball and baseball, while Ramirez played volleyball, soccer and basketball.

Caiden Kennedy

Kennedy had a very impressive four-year, three-sport career as a Bronco.

In his senior year, Kennedy was named Offensive Most Valuable Player of the football team.

Head football coach Andrew Crosby, along with offensive coordinator Charlie Casale and assistant coach Trevor Neer, also named quarterback Kennedy the top tackler on the team.

He was placed on the All-California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section 1st Team on offense and was named the All-CIF MVP on defense.

In Bronco basketball, Kennedy received the MVP award from coach Carlo Green, and in baseball Kennedy was given the Coach’s Award.

In a text message, head baseball coach Brian Machado said Kennedy was “a game-changer.”

Volleyball head coach Maggie McIntyre gave Ramirez the Coach’s Award for her contribution to the Bronco team.

She was also named to the All-Coast Valley League 2nd Team in volleyball.

Green gave the Offensive MVP award to Ramirez. She was also voted All-Coast Valley League 1st Team.

“Hatzumy was one of our main ball-handlers and our best outside shooter,” Green wrote in an email. “She also provided great leadership for the team.

“As a person, she is extremely coachable, kind and has a great sense of humor,” the coach added. “She’s an all-around great person.”

Both Kennedy and Ramirez graduated with the Coast Union Class of 2023.

Emily Reed, who played football and baseball, won the Kim Kinney Award. She went out for softball but there were not enough players so the sport was canceled.
