The Coast Union High School baseball team is 9-2, riding a nine-game winning streak and boasting a 4-0 first-place record in the Coast Valley League (CVL).

The Cambria high school has clinched at least a tie with Valley Christian Academy (VCA) in Santa Maria for the CVL championship.

The most pivotal game of the season for the Broncos is on tap Thursday. It’s a home game against archrivals VCA, which are 5-1 in the CVL — just a game behind Coast.

Last season the Broncos tied with VCA for the CVL title.

Coast had to travel more 400 miles for a playoff game.

California Interscholastic Federation rules dictate that, in the case of a tie, the team that won the second of the two games plays at home. In 2022, that was VCA.

This year, the Broncos won the first game with VCA on March 28, 8-7.

The second matchup on April 27 is crucial for both teams.

Meanwhile, the Broncos continue to win.

On April 7, Coast downed the San Luis Obispo Classical Academy Grizzlies, 13-6.

The Grizzlies are in their first year of competing in baseball. They have played football and basketball in recent years.

First baseman Dane Volz led the hit parade against the Grizzlies with three singles.

Luke Smith, Jovan Avina, Tony De Alba, Robert Saunders and Geo Garcia chipped in with singles.

On March 18, the Broncos traveled to Shandon and defeated the Outlaws, 25-1.

Coast tallied six runs in the third, 10 in the fourth and seven in the fifth inning. That was the final inning given that the Broncos were more than 10 runs ahead at that time.
