New SLO County barbershop features gilded chairs in a sleek, space-themed setting

There’s a new barbershop in Cambria, and the partners offering the haircuts want it to be an out-of-this-world styling experience.

Astro Barbershop, with its lavishly gilded, space-themed décor, opened in late June at 1071 Main St., in the same building as the Cambria Connection and Medusa’s Restaurant.

Shop owner Peri Rae Horner and her partner/business adviser Jordan Segovia are “passionate barbers who love what we do,” they said in a Nextdoor post, adding that they offer “both modern and traditional barbering services.”

With barbershops and beauty salons among the latest businesses to reopen after coronavirus closures and shelter-at-home orders went into effect, it’s been months since many North Coast residents have gotten a professional trim.

Some have had to resort to cutting their own hair at home, while others have worn hats, caps, headbands or scarves to disguise wayward locks.

Astro Barbershop held its soft opening happened soon after San Luis Obispo County gave the go-ahead for hairstyling businesses to reopen.

Horner and Segovia have been busy ever since, Horner said via phone.

At the shop, two gilded barber chairs and golden frames on large mirrors set a tone that’s accented by a large image of Earth as seen from the moon on cloth.

Horner said she and Segovia hope to add a third chair soon, along with additional décor.

To make their services safe during the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shop adheres to social distancing recommendations and other safety precautions to keep customers and the partners safe.

Masks are required, and patrons’ temperatures are checked at the door. No guests are allowed.

Patrons are told to arrive no more than five minutes before their appointments, and if they’re sick, they must reschedule.

According to COVID restrictions, the barbers cannot trim a customer’s beard or give them a shave for now.

To minimize contact, Astro Barbershop only accepts payment in cash, in the exact amount of the bill, a rule that could change in the future.

Only one parent or caregiver can accompany a child who is having a haircut according to shop rules. If that child can’t or won’t keep a mask in place, or if he or she isn’t really ready to have a haircut yet, the barbershop won’t do it.

The state and county could shut down some services again if San Luis Obispo County’s case count continues to exceed the 100-cases-per-100,000 population target for businesses and facilities to remain reopened.
