Big Sur redwoods for sale at Cambria Nursery
For those looking for an alternative holiday tree with a future, Cambria Nursery received on Sunday, Nov. 20, 50 3-year-old, 3-foot-tall Big Sur Coast redwood trees grown by tree-master Lionel Johnston of San Luis Obispo.
According to assistant manager Tammy Stone, the nursery will sell the young redwoods for $19.95 each.
Johnston of One Cool Earth has been growing, planting, selling and donating trees all over San Luis Obispo County for decades, including in many locations in and around Cal Poly, Morro Bay and Whale Rock Reservoir.
He advocates for diversity in Cambria’s forest, using species native to similar, nearshore California climates and terrains. He said that would help increase the health and longevity of the native forest.
Johnston said the redwood saplings are well adapted to the Cambria forest area, and “can be planted where a tree has been removed.”
“The former tree has developed an extensive root system, and the new tree will capture the old tree’s root system and grow very quickly,” he explained.
