Owners of the Rod and Reel trailer park on Main Street in Cambria are renting spaces to people in recreational vehicles, at least for now.

According to Coast Union High School grad Nora Baxter, who is one of two on-site employees, she’s overseeing the rental of 20 spaces, about half of which are already rented. The RVs can be up to 35 feet long, she said.

Rent is $400 a month, which currently includes water and sewer service, and “we’re about there with electricity,” which will be provided from solar panels, she said. There is no limit on the length of the stay, which can be long-term, according to Baxter.

Robert B. Enns Construction of Cayucos has been doing the grading and bringing in the gravel for about three weeks. The firm also demolished the home that had been on the site since the 1950s.

Meanwhile, county planners are awaiting plans for the park’s future from owner Steve Miller, who has applied for an after-the-fact demolition permit to remove the old house. According to county planner Airlin Singewald, “We have asked Mr. Miller to provide us with plans for the current proposal so we can determine the appropriate permitting requirements.”

While the State Department of Housing and Community Development “has jurisdiction over RV parks,” Singewald wrote in a Nov. 8 email interview, “development in the coastal zone also requires a coastal development permit from the county, unless it qualifies for an exemption.”

In July, Miller’s attorney said the park “will remain as 20 rentable mobile homes on mobile home spaces. New mobile homes will replace the very outdated existing units,” which have since been removed.
