San Luis Obispo

Soroptimist International of San Luis Obispo recently completed three charitable projects to benefit women and children during the month of March.

Five women were given $5,000 as winners of the organization’s Live Your Dream contest, which is awarded to women going back to school who are heads of household.

First place went to Angela Wright, who received $2,000; Sandra Gomez, who placed second; and Eliruth Salgado Ortiz, who placed third; each received $1,000. Geraldine Valez and Barbara Joy LeMoine each received $500.

Fifty homeless children at Prado Day Center and El Camino Homeless Organization in Atascadero were treated to Easter buckets filled with toys, stuffed animals, healthy snacks and juice, dental care items, school supplies and candy — all made and provided by club members. Easter buckets were also distributed to children of the Live Your Dream awardees.

The final project was a team effort with a Thrivant Action Team and Soroptimist members, who prepared bags of pajamas, a toy and a fleece blanket for 20 kindergarten students at Hawthorne Elementary School in San Luis Obispo.
