Good news about SLO County Sheriff deputies

SLO County

Three deputies with the SLO County Sheriff’s Office were honored with the Sheriff’s Life Saving Award at a recent general assembly to present commendations and dedicated service awards to deputies and employees.

The recipients are:

▪  Deputy Matthew Shields, who helped rescue a woman at Lopez Lake whose personal watercraft had overturned, trapping her underwater. Shields dove into the water and was able to free the woman and save her life.

▪  Deputy Brian Mollenkopf, who rescued an elderly man last July from inside a burning home in Arroyo Grande. Mollenkopf entered the burning home and was able to drag the unconscious man outside to safety and save his life.

▪  Correctional Deputy Alistair Paterson, who rescued an inmate attempting to hang himself. He immediately called for assistance and held the inmate steady while another correctional deputy untied the bed sheet from the bars, thereby saving the inmate’s life.
