Avila Beach Community Foundation awards $64,590 to local groups

The Avila Beach Community Foundation recently announced the recipients and projects selected for funding in 2018. The grants will benefit programs providing services in the areas of education, health and wellness, the environment, youth sports and community engagement.

For 2018, the foundation awarded 12 grants totaling $64,590. Here are the organizations and projects receiving grants:

▪  Achievement House — Funds to help keep downtown Avila Beach clean during the peak visitor season.

▪  Avila Beach Civic Association — Grant to offset management costs for the organization.

▪  Avila Beach Junior Lifeguards — Granted funds to continue their Junior Lifeguard program that hosts 200 youths each summer.

▪  Avila/Pismo Community News — Subsidizing home delivery of the monthly newspaper.

▪  Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School — A matching grant that funds technology upgrades for the school.

▪  Cancer Well Fit — A matching grant that provides a free 10-week fitness program to individuals recovering from cancer.

▪  Central Coast Aquarium’s Scientist for a Day Program — Grant to enable schools from low-income areas to visit the facility.

▪  Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers — Grants to cover the costs of repairing the trolley and for the restoration of the lower outdoor terrace.

▪  Peoples’ Self-Help Housing — Funds to help pay for the facility’s social services for low-income and special needs residents at Lachen Tara Apartments in Avila Beach.

▪  Port San Luis Harbor District — Funds to help pay for the nearly 100,000 “Mutts Mitts” used each year by dog-walkers.

▪  South County Area Transit (SCAT) — Subsidizing of free rides on the Avila Beach Trolley.

▪  Surfrider Foundation – Matching funds for the Blue Water Task Force program to cover costs of the equipment for weekly testing of water quality at multiple sites in Avila Beach.
