Cal Poly

Forty-five Cal Poly students recently volunteered to clean 4,000 pairs of recycled eyeglasses for ICARE International as a part of Make-A-Difference Day at Cal Poly. This was the eighth year ICARE has participated at the Cal Poly event.

As well, another 3,000 glasses were cleaned at Pacific Beach High School to go on to the AVID students at Paso Robles High School for further work.

All glasses will be given to needy people in Mexico in February.

ICARE has provided glasses to Nepal, Ghana, Haiti, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. In return, students get credits for community service.

San Luis Obispo

GleanSLO held events between Oct. 16 (World Food Day) and Oct. 24 (National Food Day) to glean agricultural organizations and backyards in the San Luis Obispo area to fight hunger and reduce food waste.

Throughout San Luis Obispo, GleanSLO recovered 8,912 pounds from seven backyards, 5,175 pounds from five farms and 763 pounds from two farmers markets for a total of 14,850 pounds of local produce rescued over an eight-day period.
