Shandon woman killed in Highway 101 crash identified

The woman killed in a Monday morning solo vehicle crash on Highway 101 was identified by the CHP on Thursday as Sarah Anne Swerdoski, 29, of Shandon.

Swerdoski was driving north on Highway 101 just south of San Diego Way in Atascadero at about 4:35 a.m. when, for reasons still unknown, she traveled off the east side of the road and onto an ascending dirt embankment, according to a CHP news release.

The 1991 Toyota Camry she was driving veered back onto the highway but Swerdoski reportedly over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle, becoming airborne and striking a freeway sign and an oak tree.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say she was not wearing a seat belt.

An investigation into the crash remained ongoing Thursday and it is not yet known if drugs or alcohol intoxication played a role.
