Fire crews on Thursday contained an Atascadero grass fire that jumped Highway 101 and burned an abandoned house on the north side of town.
The blaze started at about 2 p.m. on the west side of the freeway, near Del Rio Road and El Camino Real, where it burned 6 to 7 acres, according to Terrie Banish, Atascadero’s deputy city manager.
The fire then crossed the freeway and scorched an abandoned house near El Camino Self Storage. Highway 101 was closed briefly but has since been reopened, Banish said. The highway on- and off-ramps at Del Rio Road are currently closed to traffic.
In total, about 8 acres burned on both sides of the highway, including the structure.
No one was evacuated during the fire. The cause remains unknown at this time.
