UPDATED 12:45 p.m.
An Atascadero man was killed early Friday morning in a pickup truck crash on Highway 101 near the Santa Barbara Road offramp.
The 41-year-old around was driving south in a green Chevy 1500, just north of the Santa Barbara Road exit around 3 a.m. when he allowed the vehicle to drift east, partially into the center median, according to a CHP news release. He appeared to then overcorrect the truck toward the west side of the road and lost control of the vehicle.
The truck began to spin in a clockwise motion and hit the curb, becoming airborne. It cartwheeled into the air, and the driver was ejected onto the freeway shoulder, suffering fatal injuries.

The man’s name has not yet been released pending notification of his family, said Templeton CHP Officer Patrick Seebart.
A preliminary investigation showed the driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The CHP is conducting an investigation into the man’s activities during the 24 hours before the crash, in order to find out what may have caused it.
Although investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash, a coroner’s report and toxicology results will be needed to confirm such suspicions.
